I just wanted to say how much I love working with bands since I became part of your emails. I am a 73 year old man who competes in masters track and field meets; the shot put, discus, javelin, weight and hammer throw more specifically. Obviously technique and strength events. I would say 90 – 95% of my strength work is with bands, and I can compete with most people in my age group at the national level. I’m not saying this to brag, but to let you know that your techniques work.

My number one goal in band training is to equip my body to do whatever I want to do in my Golden Years. I want to keep hunting Whitetail deer into my 80s, possibly go on an Elk hunt again some day, mow my own lawn, run in a 5K, participate in a Triathlon, go on hikes, stay out of the hospital (I’ve been a heart patient for over 25 years), go Walleye fishing, etc.

This “Discovery Day” column resonated with me as I’m looking forward to turning 76 this summer. I’ve worked out nearly all of my life, and when my doctor recently asked me how often I work out, I told him: every day. At different periods of my life I’ve done distance jogging, bicycling, swimming, hiking, walking and/or weightlifting, taekwondo and, since I discovered RBT early in 2020, resistance band workouts. Yet I’ve always been injury prone and with age, despite my best efforts, I continue to deal with muscle strains. As a consequence, I find myself lately doing more and more “Discovery Days”.
Your resistance bands provide me the ability to find my way, varying my level of effort and targeting the amount of manageable, specific muscle stress. By keeping to lighter bands I find I can do higher rep, constant motion workouts for arms, legs, shoulders and back. Once warmed up, I’ll sometimes move up in bands, paying close attention to what my body is telling me and responding accordingly. Bottom line: Your resistance bands enable me to keep going.

Dave, that’s an excellent article. I am 48 yrs old and still playing bball against guys in their 30’s and able to maintain the same intensity without injuries. All of this because of your videos. Bands changed my fitness and body.

I read your email on aging and balance 1/9/24. Great advice. I am 70 and for the last two years I have been focused on usable strength and fall prevention through bands, plus core training through band training and medicine ball lifting while standing one legged on an inflated cushion.
Overall, I do a combination of rowing, treadmill, bands on the floor and on the air cushion four-five times a week, and medicine ball training on the cushion, for only 45 minutes. In two years, I have lost 15 pounds and reduced my blood pressure and sugar level. I don’t rest between exercises. The hardest is a three point plank while pushing a yellow band overhead with my left or right hands. I started on the orange band, moved to the red, and now use the yellow mostly. Once in a while I break out the black one for a challenge.
And just as important, my core is stronger than ever and balance is as good as it was in my 20s. I sometimes look around The Gym (Englewood NJ), and see the same people in the same poor shape week after week. I just want to scream: “Stop the weights. Get off the elliptical. Get off the treadmill. “STAY BETTER WITH BANDS.”
Take a look at the videos and remember to “get better with bands ….a medicine ball, and an air cushion.”

I discovered weightlifting when I was 38 and I am now 71. I loved everything about it and became stronger and more sculpted. Fast forward to age 65 and a multitude of soft-tissue injuries. I learned the hard way that as we age, our tissues don’t respond to stress the same as they did 20-30 years ago.
At a loss for what I could do safely, an online friend recommended band work and she followed the RBT program. I took the plunge and am glad I did. Full disclosure, those bands sat idle for a few months until I could safely use them, after a second rotator cuff surgery. I ate a little humble pie to come to terms with my new reality of giving up the iron and finally began the band work. What I appreciated so much was how strong I felt once again. I could do strength work without pain and without worry of tearing something again. If you are on the fence, take a leap of faith. You’ll be glad you did.

I have worked out for years and actually work in the industry. But I’m getting older and the load of training others and demonstrating exercises all day has caught up with me and created some injuries.
What I love about your membership is the workouts are well balanced and have specific details so everything is taken care of! It also reminds me to give equal attention to all the stabilizers and rotators that I need even more now as I age and start to lose some strength!

Here’s my take on why I like the Band Gym so much.
Bands give me the range of resistance I need to do real strength training without damaging my joints. I don’t care if I never see the inside of a gym again.
My band gym lives in a basket that fits in my hallway. I move a chair out of the way and the living room becomes a fully equipped gym. Anytime I want it, before breakfast or after work. No wasted time traveling back and forth, no waiting, broken machines or missing dumbbells.
But the best part of the Band Gym is you. I love the care and the expertise that you put into the routines. The fact that you’re always available to answer questions (and you have a sense of humor) is the icing on the cake.
Just don’t retire!

Perhaps the greatest part of being a band gym member is the direct access we have to you. Your knowledge of anatomy and the functioning of the body as a whole unit is unmeasurable when it comes to putting together a program that keeps us challenged, motivated, and primed to be active in our 90’s. The ability to ask questions and timely responses directly from you is worth its weight in gold.. Thank you.
Secondly, the way that your programs sorta sneak up on you is amazing. What appears simplistic at first becomes amazingly challenging quickly. I believe this is due to incorporating the entire body to function as it was designed, as a complete instrument, so those stabilizer muscles that never get thought of become extremely important. It’s this simple approach to fitness that makes it easy for the layperson to follow, understand, and stay dedicated to, especially when one feels their body get back in balance and aches and pains ( bad ones) become a thing of the past.
I also appreciate how you consider how to incorporate our ideas like when you said you would try to come up with CrossFit style workouts when I asked you about it. It makes one feel like they belong and let’s be real, everyone wants to be heard.
Finally, I like how you share just enough of your life with us that you feel like an old friend even though we haven’t met in person. It’s truly enjoyable getting your emails, watching some of your posts etc.. If you ever thought about doing a live, follow along workout, I’m in.
Anyway, enjoy the day the Lord has given you, always be thankful, and maintain your humbleness. Thank you for all you do. I understand it’s part of your livelihood but you do seem to enjoy it.

What I love about being an all access member of The Band gym for years now is that you get incredible access to the best resistance band training tips and workouts in the world. You also have direct access to the man who essentially brought this wonderful style of training to the masses. Also, how you explain the best movements for particular sports and why they are important! Where do I start on the reasons I love the Band Gym. Around 2 years ago I was looking for a simpler way to work out with our weight equipment in our gym here at our 55 plus resort in Southern Texas. I wasn’t in love with working out with weights and weight machines.
Then I came across Dave and his Band Gym web page. I knew I had found my way to exercise Nirvana. I love the ease of using the bands. I don’t have to add or take off weight to adjust the exercise. I just step forward or backward till I get the tension I desire for the exercise. I can take them with me anywhere I go and can always find a way to workout with them. When we travel I have a set of bands with me so I can get my exercise in for the day. Whether the hotel we are staying has a gym or not.
I appreciate how he goes through each exercise so you can see how it is to be done. As a Band Gym member I have access to all his videos and articles. I have not once been sorry that I have joined the group and have gotten more from my membership than I paid for it .
Dave does give you more than what you have paid for.

As an All Access Member of the Band Gym, I enjoy the wealth of helpful information and clear and concise instruction that is available to me. One of the primary reasons I value my Band Gym membership is your ongoing dedication to expand fitness options for old timers like myself. I was introduced to bands early in the COVID outbreak. My initial experience was with another website/company that got me started. Once I was introduced to RBT, I found practical knowledge and motivation that was focused on long run health and wellness. I don’t do all of the various exercises you introduce, but through experience I’ve learned to modify them to meet my limitations.
For you looking to enter the third phase of your life is an admirable goal. For me, at 75 with granddaughters 16 and 13, my goal is to see them mature and allow me to meet great grandchildren.

I realized as I was aging that I needed a joint-friendly resistance training format, enter the Band Gym. I like all the routines, how to scale the exercises and the constant variety. FYI, I purchased the Beginner Thunder-band last fall (2023) and used the PDF you sent me to develop my routines.
I start 6 days a week with a 2 mile walk. I use the bands 3X per week for a full body workout that usually lasts 35-38 mins, with an average heart rate of 136 (not too bad for 63). I engage in cardio 3 days (2 days swimming 1500 yards + a day on an exercise bike for 36 mins). One day I walk for 3-4 miles.
My goal this year is to implement the mobility routines you strongly encourage (“movement over muscle”), to ensure I maintain the capability to move.
The Band Gym gives me access to so many resources and variety, I never leave home without it.
Remember Dave, we are what we do, not what we say, behavior counts.

I have been training in the Band Gym since its inception. If it was not for RBT, I would not be able to train because of my injuries.
Weights have torn my body apart, you know of all the surgeries I have been able to avoid because of RBT and the band gym!
The biggest thing I enjoy is how adaptable your system is for anybody, athletes, beginners, people who are older and have injuries too. But also customer service is the best there is because of you and Karen.
At 63, I can’t run due to knee replacements. My heart rate was getting up to about 82 bpm before I started with the band gym.
Today my resting heart rate is 46 bpm. I think it’s improving everyday! Now there is no magic to this except showing up to The Band Gym consistently and following all the band gym insider info you send out freely, what an awesome gem full of valuable information that is!

What I love most about being a member of The Band Gym is having Dave on call for when things aren’t going right. If all is well, I do okay for myself. You often mention that one of the many benefits of training with resistance bands is convenience and that is so true. I am fortunate to live in a community that has several exercise stations located throughout its park. I enjoy going there often and get in a band workout. It is so convenient because all I need to do is pack a few bands and a towel in my backpack and I am out the door. I attach the bands to the exercise machines and am able to get a great workout. I also use some of the exercise machines and use bands for added resistance. It really is a great way for me to get in a fast outdoor workout.
I just renewed my Band Gym membership and want to tell you that it is the best money I could ever spend. It not only gives me access to so much information contained in The Band Gym but the opportunity to receive daily workouts and exercise information emails from you.
