Resistance Band Setup that will change how we train with bands - 15th February 2012
Resistance Band Setup may open up an entirely new way to train with bands
Â
A few months ago I was introduced to Louie Simmon’s belt squat machine which instantly caught my attention for several reasons.
- It was similar to something I used in the early 90’s using a weight belt and chains. At that time I enjoyed training on it but it took up a lot floor space and was not very practical for home
- Another reasons was due to it’s impact on the lumbar spine. As I get older, I find squatting to be one of the most demanding movements on my body. Even though I use a different resistance band setup for squats most of the time, I still enjoy loading up with a little deadweight now and then.
- It was so simple and it helped me automatically perform a slight anterior pelvic tilt as I went into my squat. This is good because many of my younger athletes do not have a feel for how to do this. As a result it reflexively taught clients and athletes how to effectively load their hips during squatting.
So like I do with any idea, I go down into the resistance band lab and start to experiment.
The result, thanks to Louie, is a resistance band setup that I think may replace the crossover setup in many situations.

Band Purchase Recommendations for the Belt Resistance Band Setup
My suggestion is you consider picking up a Large Single Band Package if you wish to train at home using the Belt set up or if you are looking at setting it up with partners, pick up an Advanced Band Package or Professional Band Package if you want to load up with stronger lower bands.  Lastly, if you have all the bands except the XX-Large Blue bands or XXX-Large Gray bands, all you need to do is pick up a pair of those and you can start using the BELT resistance band setup.

What kind of waistline limitation is there here Dave? I’m assuming you’re about a 34. What do you think is the top range this can work at?

Dave…great setup! I have been playing around with banded squats with many of my groups and many of them are uncomfortable with the bands around their shoulders. This is a very good alternative! Thanks!
