Resistance Bands and Getting Better as a Fitness Professional - 12th January 2012
When I started training clients and athletes with resistance bands in 1996, I was shooting from the hip to say the least.
I knew what I wanted to achieve but to say I got instant results would be a lie. However, over time I started to create a band training blue print that started to show consistent results within about 2 to 3 weeks. I know this may seem quick but understand what I was looking for was neuromuscular changes, not morphological changes; at least not immediately.
As a fitness professional, your first goal should be to get muscles activated and movement quality good. Once the recruitment patterns are firing well, now over time and proper nutrition you will start to get cosmetic changes.
As part of my birthday gift to all the fitness pro’s, along with the my 3 day resistance bands and book promotion, I wanted to share with you 10 ways to bring bands into your business in 2012 and not just get clients better but make some additional passive revenue at the same time.
I suggest you follow this 10 step format if you have never trained with bands. If you are a veteran or have been playing around with them you are welcome to check off the ones you have done.
Step 1
Start training with bands yourself. The only way you determine if bands work is to feel it first-hand. It should take about 2 to 3 weeks or about 5 sessions and you will start seeing some nice neuromuscular changes. If you need bands, consider the Economy or Total Fitness Packages
Step 2
Start stretching yourself with resistance bands.
One of the biggest eye-openers for me was when I started stretching with bands every day…. And I mean EVERY DAY. My hips started freeing up, my shoulders instantly felt better and I started feeling great. Learn how to stretch with bands by looking at my youtube videos.
Step 3
Start creating and performing at least 3 – 20 minute Tabata circuits each week You can find some examples of these HERE. A great time to do these is either before your normal workout or better yet as a 20 minute finisher. I also did these on days when getting a workout in was tough due to a time crunch.
Step 4
Invite a client or 2 to join you for a band only workout that you have done at least 2 times. Watch their response as they go through the workout. I take this for granted these days because my clients are so efficient at training with bands but you will be surprised at how hard it is for them and how easy it is for you even though you have only done it a couple of times. People that only lift weights do not train through the range of motion and bands force you to do this. Partner Band Training will get you even more excited bands.
Step 5
Hopefully by now you are 4 weeks into band training and feeling pretty good about the results. If this is the case, it’s time to do an attachment free single band group workout. (see my top 10 exercises to get started with) and use these as your workout. Make it a big event and get all your campers to come.
Step 6
Obviously you will need resistance bands
So if you have not yet ordered any additional bands, make sure you do so at www.resistancebandtraining.com. (Shameless plug) However this is a great time to join my affiliate program and start earning 15% on every band you buy personally or for your clients.
Step 7
After you run the band only bootcamp workout, you are going to have a lot of people talking so it’s time to maximize the opportunity and start holding band only workouts every week. Along with this start having special Saturday Band Training Camps for Flexibility, Agility, Speed and fat burning which are specialty camps so you can charge for them. When the specialty camp is finished, have order forms for bands ready. Tell you attendees you are submitting a band order and if they want to save on shipping let you know what they want and you will take care of ordering it under your affiliate program.
Step 8
Now that you have slowly become known for your band training and it has created a little passive income for you, it might be time to become a Certified Band Specialist. If not it is definitely time to see if you can tap into other markets using bands. What is your biggest interest?? Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Seniors, Kids…. It really doesn’t matter because I have trained them all with bands and they will get better. All you have to do is make them aware of the impact elastic training has on their body’s ability to perform better and you are on your way.
Step 9
Once you start getting a band niche started with your most enjoyable client population, how about starting an actual camp for that specific population. All you need is space and bands.
Step 10
Don’t ever stop learning or training with bands and don’t every stop watching my weekly blog posts. I will keep giving you new information all the time and I promise doors will continue to open when you least expect it.
Getting BETTER with BANDS
Dave

Thanks Dave,
For all the hard work you have put into revolutionizing fitness and how to train athletes with bands. I have been able to prepare many of the hardest working Division I athletes for their sports by use of these simple, cost-effective tools. You would be happy to know that one of my clients caught several touchdowns this year from RGIII, he has trained with bands since his junior year in high school.
Another client is playing LB at LSU, trained with bands. Two sophomores that will be starting for Oklahoma next year, yep..trained with bands!
Get this…also in 2011, another client who was supposed to be the third string quarterback for his high school team was called up to start when both QB’s were injured after the second game of the regular season this young man ended up leading his team into the third round of the playoffs and was crowned MVP of the most competitive district in Texas football (a district that houses the State Championship team from the previous year and the team from this year, both teams who were beaten during the regular season by my client’s team with him at QB. He’s also ranked 5th in the state in Total Offense. That kid got better with bands Dave! And he referred me the injured QB on his team who is signing to Notre Dame this year, guess what???…already training him in bands!
The results are real. It’s sky rocketing my referral business like crazy. I’m getting so much better every day and my clients are too. Your continued on line support is absolutely priceless. Next step for me is the Resistance Band certification!
By the way, here is a photo of me and one of my hardworking clients Travis Arthur, just after a reactive band workout.
Travis was the most conditioned freshman football recruit for Texas A&M University in 2011. As said by the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Dave, when I was growing up, everyone would say “its the shoes”, I hope that I live to see the day when you’ll have a commercial with an athlete soaring through air and someone yelling “It’s the Bands!” Keep doing good things Band Man!
In health,

Dave great post. At a recent certification one guy there told me your certification was one of the tops he had ever been at. This guy had like 15 certifications so that impressed me. Thanks for your help!
