Training with Bands is not just another fitness fad - 12th December 2011

Jillian Michaels and Training with Bands… Watch out if they every meet!!

I am just like many of you when it comes to fitness fads in that I like to see what others are doing.   I am always intrigued with the latest and greatest fitness gadget that someone is trying to promote.   Most of them, as many of you know, are not worth it but it’s still fun to watch and see what type of marketing spin they use to get individuals to buy.

It’s funny, when I first started training with bands 15 plus years ago, most people told me it was just another fitness fad that would come and go.  I kept telling them that training with bands was not the case because bands offered a unique type of resistance and training that was essential to keeping the body functioning at a high level.

I continued to emphasis to them:

The importance of training with an ascending resistance as compared to a variable resistance that came with deadweight training

The fact that bands were independent of gravity and therefore could apply true horizontal and rotational force vectors

The ability to have unlimited resistance that could be used to train anywhere

The ability to attach bands to your body and automatically activate dormant muscles that were leading to overuse injuries

That next to body weight, training with bands was the next best alternative to training large groups of fitness enthusiasts, middle school children, and athletes

Bands could be used anywhere, anytime, at any intensity with anybody

Bands could be used to dramatically impact all aspects of fitness and performance

Fortunately I did not let others sway me from believing in what I felt and knew was correct.  I just kept plugging away and talking to anyone that would take an interest in training with bands.   I kept educating, sharing, teaching and training with bands both personally and professionally.  Yes it has been a slow climb and frankly I think we have a long way to go.

However when I saw that I had made the same list as Jillian Michaels, it was quite humbling and exciting to know, RBT was starting to impact the masses.
