How To Do Your Own Charity Youth Mini Camp - 2nd August 2010

Youth Mini Camp

Last year I wanted to raise a little money to help off-set the cost of building a new varsity locker room.   My idea was to help the Hawks youth football program by providing their athletes the chance to “knock the rust off” and get in 3 workouts before the season started.  It also benefits the coaches because they get the chance to learn some easy and fun conditioning drills they can use once the season actually starts.

So I went to the Hawks Football Board and proposed the idea.   They thought it was a good idea and helped me market it by sending out an email I wrote which included a link to an information page I put on my GtownFastnFit.com website.   Believe it or not that is all the marketing I did.

The camp cost $30 per athlete and all the money is being donated this year to the G’town Power Program to help upgrade our weight room facility.

So I don’t know when your youth football program begins but ours starts August 7th.   I sent this year’s information out July 1st.   I was concerned it would be too late but in reality, it was perfect because it tied in with my Quick Kids 6 week camp I have run for the past 3 summers.  That camp ended July 21sr so parents were able to take 1 week off and then have the kids take part in this year’s mini-camp right before football started.

Last year I ran it the next week and I think that was too soon.  This year’s camp has almost tripled with 85 athletes presently registered.

With that many athletes I obviously need help so to make it more of a community event; I bring in 12 to 15 varsity football players to help me out.  They enjoy working with the kids and the way I set up the camp workouts, all they have to do is demo some simple drills that I have used with them all summer long and then monitor the station

The most important part I ask them to do is show excitement by jumping in and joining the kids any time they can.   The kids love it when the older guys join them.

Now the youth mini camp is not all running.

It incorporates a dynamic warm up, quick burst running, strength training, agility, tumbling and a battle ball tournament.  I will share with you my program design tomorrow and hopefully have some video to share with you as well.
