The Fastest Way to go from a 4.7 to 4.4 40 yard dash - 26th July 2010

Every year my family goes camping with many of my relatives in July.  It’s one of those yearly family reunions that allow me to catch up with all the nieces and nephews.  We have been doing it for over 15 years, so needless to say I have watched a lot of nieces and nephews grow up.

However, this year was extra special because my 17 year old nephew, Logan was at the camp ground all weekend.   Now normally that is not the case because Logan helps out a lot on the family farm.  Along with doing some serious physical labor on the farm, Logan also is dedicated to the weight room and has been lifting 3 to 4 times per week since he was a sophomore.

logan12 years ago this guy was a buck 35 defense back getting bounce around a bit on the football field.  With some serious dedication to the weight room he now weighs in at 175 pounds and as you can see there not much waist weight.

There is no question Logan has done all the right stuff and worked hard to get himself ready to be a play maker at strong safety this year.   However, Logan was never a burner and he knew it.  So after being timed at 4.72 40 yard dask in March, Logan dedicated himself to doing something he did not enjoy but knew he needed.

Logan and I had spoken several times about the importance of getting more flexible through his hips.  All the weight training had made him a strong guy with tight hips.  Not a good thing if you are a defense back.    So just like with weight training, Logan dug in and started being more aggressive with his band stretching program in conjunction with his continued dedication to lifting.

He started stretching hard 4 to 5 times per week after school and also did a little extra at home using a band his uncle Dave (that’s me) hooked him up with.    On June 23rd, almost 3 months to the day, Logan was timed at 4.43.  When asked what made the difference, he immediately noted his commitment to band stretching.

logan2Working with high school athletes, it can be hard to convince them about the importance of doing aggressive dynamic (not static) stretching and I have yet to find a better way to stretch than with resistance bands.

Needless to say, I am really excited to follow Logan’s season not just because he is my nephew and not because he trains in bands.  I am excited for Logan because he identified what he needed to do to get better and got it done.

Good Luck this season Logan, your Uncle Dave is going to be watching the score box every Friday night.

Great post Dave! Stretching and recovery is often one of the most overlooked and necessary tools in high school training programs. Keep up the good info. Your bands are top notch.
