Band training for the Butt - 17th June 2010

Band Training for Functional Strength

By now it is not a secret why band training is unmatched when it comes to training the lower torso.  Not only does it increase workload like all other tools but it also speeds up the aspects of function that make life so challenging.

You know… Gravity, Momentum and Ground Reaction forces

Along with that band training can also create true horizontal vector forces which simply cannot be matched with any dead weight tool.

Why is this so important??

  • 95% of all injuries to the knee, ankle, hip and low back are directly a result of our inability to slow down and load effectively
  • Over 90% of those injuries are created by shear forces (horizontal and rotational combined force vectors)
  • Momentum is normally horizontal and vertical not just vertical assuming you are on your feet which is where injury causing posture come out of

So let’s add up why hip and leg band training makes our butt sore

  1. Emphasizes Horizontal vector training which is what really makes the butt work
  2. Speeds up momentum which makes us have to decelerate faster or more efficient
  3. It allows us to workout on our feet so we get much better gluteal activation
  4. We can work the lower torso fast, slow, light and heavy which means the neuromuscular system has to constantly adapt.
  5. We can easily work all planes of motion so we don’t miss a single muscle fiber
  6. Since your hands are free, you could go crazy and add dead weight on top of band training.  Ouch!!

It is very seldom that I do not feel the benefits of a lower torso and hip workout the next day.

Typically my butt wants no part of exercise the next day.  This is why I usually make the day after lower torso band training my off day.  It is also why we train lower torso region last at my boot camps.  Once your legs go it is time to shut things down.

Start training with bands and make sure you do it with a partner so you can share your butt pain the next day.  Here is how we knock out a butt and leg partner band workout using the exclusive Resistance Band Training 30-5-30 Partner Sound Tracks powered by my good friend BJ Gaddour at Workout Muse.
